On November 7th I will be running the NYC Marathon in support of The Organization for Autism Research and in honor of my son, William. It has been my pleasure to support OAR these last 4 years because of their focus on using research to help identify ways to improve the everyday lives of those with autism and their families. I hope you will consider supporting this cause and helping us reach our goal.

William is now 16 and has entered his second year of HS. He remains an inspiration to his family as he reaches new goals and hits new milestones. Whether it’s overcoming the unknown of entering his first in-person year of HS, the anxiety of getting a shot, or his successes in becoming more and more independent, we are always impressed at his resolve when taking on challenges in his life.

Most of these are not routine for him, but with time and assurance, he has shown he will endure and succeed. And, when he does succeed, he is also wise enough to say “Hey, didn’t I do great? I should pick a place for dinner tonight to celebrate”. And celebrate we do. First days of school, tests, flu shots, Dr. appointments, showers, you name it, we’ve had a celebration. We are looking forward to the many more milestones that William reaches, and the celebrations to follow.

Here are some of the ways that OAR uses the funds raised by the RUN FOR AUTISM team:

$10 provides a Curriculum in a Box professional development set to general education teachers.
$25 provides 15 copies of A Guide to Safety to families and first responders.
$100 provides the Kit for Kids peer education resource to an entire elementary or middle school.
$150 provides 100 copies of a Life Journey through Autism guidebook sent to a community support group or military installation.
$1,000 provides a research grant for a graduate student studying autism.
$3,000 provides a scholarship for a student with autism to attend college.
$40,000 fully underwrites an applied research pilot study.
