Hello, and welcome to my fundraising page. My name is Liam and i'm an Irish primary school teacher working in an Autism class in Gaelscoil Thulach na nÓg in county Meath. My experience as an Autism teacher and working with Autistic children has been incredible, and it has opened my eyes to the level of support and care that these children require to create an environment where they can excel and be happy.
I have chosen the Organization for Autism Research as my charity, as the OAR is responsible for funding research projects to improve the lives of Autistic people and their families lives also. Their research focuses on education, social skills and employment, with the goal of transferring their findings into practical research.
The OAR is an American charity and it's website provides abundant free resources, including manuals and research articles on Autism. As an educator, I can attest to the invaluable nature of these resources in devising classroom-based strategies to improve the education of Autistic children. As the saying goes, no two autistic people are the same, and the more individual-based research available, the more resources educators and parents have at their disposal to improve the lives of Autistic people.
Here are some of the ways that OAR uses the funds raised by the RUN FOR AUTISM team:
$1,000 provides a research grant for a graduate student studying autism. $3,000 provides a scholarship for a student with autism to attend University. $40,000 fully underwrites an applied research pilot study.
The grants are for US universities, however the research is shared around the world for the benefit of the global Autistic community.
